But terrestrial links are still needed to deliver capacity to the downstream countries like Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi for the cable initiatives to bring full commercial benefits. Backbone links are also planned in four out of five countries in the region.

Stakeholders in the EIG cable are scheduled to meet in Kampala this week to deliberate on the project’s detailed procurement a source told The EastAfrican.
